A state trooper likely saved the life of a woman who overdosed on heroin inside a car Monday afternoon in Shickshinny, state police at Wyoming said in a press release. Morgantini was alerted to the woman in distress by a pedestrian who flagged him down on Route 11 around 12:45 p.m. The pedestrian said he saw a man forcibly shaking an unconscious woman in a car on East Union Street, police said.

Emergency crews launched water rescue efforts Saturday night after receiving reports that someone either fell or jumped from the Carey Avenue Bridge connecting Hanover Township and Plymouth Township just before 9:30 p.m. By 10:30 p.m., police confirmed that there were sightings of someone in the river and rescue workers were trying to get a sighting on the victim at the Broadway Street Bridge in Nanticoke. According to personnel at the Broadway Street Bridge, efforts there failed and rescue workers were heading farther downstream toward Shickshinny.

West Nanticoke man gets up to 10 years for robbery

A West Nanticoke man accused of robbing a man during a comic book sale was sentenced Friday to serve up to 10 years in prison. Joshua Ruchinski, 27, was ordered to serve five to 10 years in prison for robbery, as well as for a count of theft in a separate case.

Ex-care provider balks at plea agreement

A former home care provider accused of sexual assault of a patient has declined to enter a plea as part of an agreement with prosecutors in northeastern Pennsylvania. Fifty-four-year-old Andrew Dula III of Shickshinny is charged in Luzerne County with felony institutional sexual assault of a 36-year-old woman who has spastic cerebral palsy and is developmentally disabled.

Trial date set for trio accused of murder

A trio of defendants accused of killing a 21-year-old man and dumping his body last year will go to trial in September. State police charged Preston Layfield, Amanda Wayda and Tyler Mirabelli in August with first- and third-degree murder and related counts after discovering the body of Joshua Rose in the Susquehanna County woods.

Retirements result in four open county district magistrate posts

Seats currently based in Kingston, Shickshinny, Trucksville and Wright Township are open for the first time in years, leading to a flood of candidates jockeying for the coveted, powerful positions.
